Reggae music was created in Jamaica in 1950s. It has its roots in ska and soul music, but also has distinctive rhythm with unaccented beats that distinguishes it from them. It is strongly connected with Rastafarianism and marijuana which is considered a sacred herb by the Rastafarians. The most prominent raegge musicians were Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff. It has evolved into other genres, such as raeggeton, dancehall and raggamuffin.
