Speed = Frequency x Wavelength

That's it!

That equation that shows the relationship between the speed, frequency and wavelength of a wave is what we know as the wave equation.

Symbolically,

v = fλ 

where,
v = speed (ms⁻¹)
f = frequency (Hz) and
λ = wavelength (m).

λ is Greek letter lambda.

A mnemonic I use for this is
v = fλ (vee is equal to fela) :D


In certain cases however, a more complex form,

y = A sin [(2πx/λ) - ωt] may be used.

Even more complex forms, involving differential calculus, exist; yet, all a wave equation does is to describe the passage of harmonic waves through a medium.
